Belo's monthly Revenue and Statistical Report October 2001

Dallas, TX -- Belo(NYSE: BLC) issued today its statistical report for the month of October.

Television Group revenues decreased 21.9 percent for the month of October on a pro forma basis. In October 2000, Belo's Television Group recorded $20 million of political revenue compared to $1.6 million in October 2001. Excluding political revenue in both years, spot revenues were up 6.5 percent for the month. Automotive revenues were up 18.5 percent. Significant increases were also seen in the restaurant, grocery, home improvement and financial services categories. The telecom and .com categories continued to show significant declines.

Newspaper Group total revenues were down 18.8 percent in October on a pro forma basis. October 2000 had one more Sunday than October 2001. Excluding the effect of the extra Sunday last year, Newspaper Group revenues were down approximately 13 percent, mostly due to lower classified employment and .com advertising revenue at The Dallas Morning News.

October Newspaper Linage
At The Dallas Morning News, total full-run advertising linage, including preprints and supplements, was down 19.9 percent versus last year. Retail was down 17.8 percent with decreases in the department store, electronics and furniture categories. General volume was down 27 percent primarily due to the loss of .com advertising and weakness in the telecom and financial categories. Classified volumes were down 20 percent with continued weakness in classified employment.

At The Providence Journal, total full-run advertising linage, including preprints and supplements, decreased 31.9 percent, while total full-run ROP was down 16.7 percent. Retail, general and classified volumes decreased 34.7 percent, 22.4 percent and 18.7 percent, respectively.
