Belo enters Consumer Expositions Market with new business unit
Dallas, TX --Belo Corp. (NYSE: BLC) today announced the creation of Belo Expositions, a business unit that will produce, manage and promote consumer-oriented events in Belo's key markets and regions, including Texas, the Southwest and the Northwest. Patrick Buchen, a 25-year consumer marketing and expositions veteran, was named general manager of the new unit.
Belo Expositions' first event -- "The Better Living Flower & Outdoor Show" -- will be presented by The Dallas Morning News and WFAA-TV on April 4-6 at the Dallas Convention Center.
"With the power of Belo's media presence behind it, Belo Expositions has an opportunity to be a leader in the rapidly growing consumer expositions market," said Jack Sander, executive vice president/Media Operations. "Patrick's success in growing and promoting consumer shows makes him the perfect choice to lead this important business extension."
Buchen was most recently chief operating officer and vice president of sales for TSNN.com, an Internet portal for the consumer/trade show industry.
Prior to TSNN.com, Buchen was president of NetWork Events, a producer of high-tech career consumer shows and a provider of Internet-based recruiting services for technology companies. While there, he doubled the number of produced events in one year, to 44. He also served as president of HSI Show Productions, a producer of regional consumer and trade shows.
"Competition in consumer expositions remains relatively fragmented. Belo's opportunity to consolidate the market for advertisers and exhibitors is an important one and is enhanced by the Company's proven record of leveraging synergies across its television and newspaper assets," Buchen said.
Sander added: "Our audiences and advertisers know they can depend on us for a quality experience. In providing a new type of consumer experience through Belo Expositions, we intend to succeed with the same focus on quality that has been our hallmark."
Buchen leads a staff that includes James Bryan, show director; Ann McKinley, sales manager; and Rosalinda Cerda, exposition assistant.
