NewsChannel 3 is Arizona's most-watched tv station

Phoenix, AZ --KTVK-TV NewsChannel 3 is the most watched TV station in Arizona according to the just released Nielsen TV ratings for May 2003.

The number one position is the station's first May sweeps victory since 19921. The station's total viewership grew 5% between May 2002 and May 2003 as measured seven days per week, 6:00am to 2:00am ("sign on to sign off"). In contrast, Phoenix' second place station, NBC affiliate KPNX channel 12, lost 16% of its total viewership during the same period. This is the second consecutive rating sweep victory scored by Phoenix independent NewsChannel 3 after a similar performance in the most recent February 2003 rating period.

"Despite the national networks' roll-out of their biggest stunts and season finales in May, Arizona viewers have again shown that coverage of local news and information is what's really important to them" said NewsChannel 3 president and general manager, Skip Cass.

"This kind of performance for an independent station is unmatched in the TV industry, and is driven by NewsChannel 3's ongoing commitment to the best in local news coverage coupled with family-oriented programming including The Oprah Winfry Show and Dr. Phil as well as our long-standing association with The Arizona Diamonbacks."

Other growth areas include NewsChannel 3's early evening newscast, Good Evening Arizona from 4:30pm to 6:30pm, which grew by 4% over the previous year2 while perennial morning news leader, Good Morning Arizona, increased it lead with viewing 7% higher than in May 20023. Daytime talkshows Dr. Phil and The Oprah Winfrey Show showed dramatic growth by 165% and 22%, respectively verses the same time periods in May 20024.

With two sweeps victories already this year, the next Nielsen rating period begins in early July. NewsChannel 3 has been recognized as the top rated station in Arizona during every July rating period since 1998. Should NewsChannel 3 continue this successful July trend, it would leave only the November sweep remaining to make NewsChannel 3 the most watched station in Arizona year-round.
