#1 powerhouse KTVK-TV makes history
Phoenix, AZ -- KTVK-TV, the nation's #1 independent television station, made history with its fourth consecutive sweep victory in November, 2003. KTVK's record 2003 performance is a first-ever for an independent TV station. It achieved a number one ranking in February, May, July and November 2003 (M-Su, 5a-2a). The station's November win is also the first time since November 1994 that KTVK has won the November ratings period.
Not only does KTVK remain the TV station most watched by Phoenix viewers, its local news is also the most viewed according to the just released Nielsen TV ratings for November 2003.
Skip Cass, president and general manager, said: "KTVK is renowned as a differentiated television station and news operation, historically turning out winning ratings that are uncommon for an independent station. To become the first independent television station in the country to ever win all four major ratings sweeps of the year says a lot about our team and the personality of the television station. This reinforces our belief that a genuine and real focus on our local community is still what is most valued by our viewers."
KTVK attracted more viewers than any other television station in 10 of the 21 hours between 5:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m., led by Good Morning Arizona from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., Good Evening Arizona from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and the top syndicated programs of Oprah, Dr. Phil and Entertainment Tonight.
With a 3.8 household rating sign-on to sign-off (M-Su 5a-2a), KTVK has an advantage over KPNX-TV and KSAZ-TV, which delivered a 3.7 and 3.6 household rating respectively.
KTVK, which produces more hours of local news than any other Phoenix station, also maintained its position as the most watched television news operation among all Phoenix television stations according to the November Nielsen TV ratings. Of the top 10 highest rated newscasts in the market, KTVK produces five, KSAZ and KPNX produce two each, while KPHO produces one.
In those weekday time periods where all television stations are programming local news at the same time, KTVK newscasts reach more local news viewers, out-delivering KSAZ by 12% and KPNX by 22%. For total overall local news viewing during weekdays, ratings for KTVK's newscasts out-delivered KSAZ and KPNX by 31% and 146% respectively.
