WCNC names new assistant news director
Charlotte, N.C. -- Mary Alvarez has been promoted to assistant news director at WCNC. For the past four and a half years Mary has been the special projects manager for 6 News. Special Projects at WCNC produces the "Carolina Traveler", a monthly hour long program that brings the unique people and places of the Carolinas home. Also, Special Projects has 6 News' investigative team "The Investigators. Created just over two years ago it is the region's most honored and most successful television investigative team.
Under Mary's leadership the Special Projects unit has won more awards for journalistic excellence than any other station in the Carolinas including statewide AP awards, regional Edward R. Murrow awards and a national Peabody award. The Special Projects unit, under her direction, has earned a reputation for rock solid storytelling, outstanding enterprise and hard hitting investigative reporting.
Mary is a graduate of Florida State University. Before coming to WCNC she worked as a producer, executive producer and assistant news director at WSVN in Miami and as a special projects producer at WPLG in Miami. Mary will take the reins in her new role beginning Monday October 25.
