Belo's monthly revenue and statistical report January 2006
Dallas, TX - Belo Corp. (NYSE: BLC) issued today its statistical report for the month of January. Consolidated revenue for January increased 5.4 percent versus January of last year with solid increases in the Newspaper Group and the Television Group.
Newspaper Group total revenue increased 6.1 percent for the month of January versus the prior year, with a 5.2 percent increase in advertising revenue. Advertising revenue increased 6.4 percent at The Dallas Morning News, 5.6 percent at The Providence Journal, and 1.6 percent at The Press-Enterprise in Riverside.
Television Group revenues increased 4.6 percent in January versus the prior year with spot revenue up 3.7 percent. Local spot revenues increased 3.6 percent and national spot revenues increased 0.7 percent.
At The Dallas Morning News, total revenue increased 9.6 percent in January versus last year, including an estimated $2.4 million in incremental circulation revenue associated with the implementation of the Circulation Review Team's recommended changes at The Dallas Morning News, primarily the move from a buy-sell arrangement to a fee-for-delivery distribution system. Advertising revenues, which were not affected by the increase in circulation revenue, increased 6.4 percent in January 2006 versus January 2005. The increase at The Dallas Morning News was led by a 21 percent increase in general full-run ROP revenue. Within general, significant increases were noted in the financial and travel categories. Classified revenue was up 6.4 percent in January with a 37 percent increase in classified employment, a 0.3 percent increase in classified real estate and an 18 percent decrease in classified automotive. Retail full-run ROP revenue decreased 2.2 percent with increases in the department stores and travel categories and decreases in the furniture and sporting goods categories.
At The Providence Journal, advertising revenue increased 5.6 percent in January 2006 versus January 2005 with total revenue up 2.8 percent. Classified revenue increased 6.9 percent in January led by strong classified real estate, which was up 16 percent versus the prior year.
At The Press-Enterprise, advertising revenues increased 1.6 percent in January 2006 versus January 2005 with total revenue down 0.4 percent. Classified revenues increased in January while retail and general revenues decreased. In January 2005, ad revenue at The Press-Enterprise increased 22 percent versus January 2004.
