WVEC-TV13 helps CHKD Telethon Raise Record Breaking $3.76 Million

Norfolk , VA. -- WVEC-TV13 helps the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters raise $3,765,208 during its annual Telethon Celebration. This broke the 2005 record of $3.65 million dollars!

The June 4 Telethon featured dozens of businesses, organizations and individuals raising money for CHKD and presenting donations during the broadcast, which aired live from the hospital lobby on WVEC-TV13. Former and current patients and their families went on air to share their stories of how the hospital has helped them through illness and injury. The broadcast was hosted by 13NEWS talent, including David Alan, Kathryn Barrett, Joe Flanagan, Regina Mobley, Craig Moeller, Sandra Parker and Janet Roach.

"We thank everyone who hosted a fund-raiser, called in a donation or shared their story with the viewing audience on Telethon day," said Beth Duke, CHKD's senior vice president for community relations. "Of course, this day would be impossible without our wonderful friends at WVEC-TV13. The enthusiasm, dedication and hard work of everyone involved in the production, behind-the-scenes and on-camera, is deeply appreciated."

"What was most extraordinary is that our local segments were all condensed into a seamless five hours which was another first." said WVEC-TV13 Community Affairs Director Wendy Juren.

"I'm very proud of this year's telecast," said WVEC-TV13 Production Manager Greg Brauer, "beyond the on-air efforts, the results of this ongoing 13NEWS/CHKD partnership yields tremendous help for the children and families in our community."

Proceeds raised from the Telethon benefit CHKD, Hampton Road's only hospital dedicated exclusively to children. CHKD provides a comprehensive range of services -- from primary care and immunizations to life-saving critical care -- to the children of southeastern Virginia, northeastern North Carolina and Virginia's Eastern Shore. CHKD is one of the 170 premier hospitals affiliated with Children's Miracle Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children by raising funds and awareness for affiliated children's hospitals throughout North America.
