Warwick Veterans Memorial High School Graduate Named 2006 Dick Reynolds Correspondent Scholarship Recipient
Providence, R.I. Brandon Pearson of Warwick Veterans Memorial High School is the 2006 Dick Reynolds Correspondent scholarship recipient.
Pearson will be awarded the $5,000 scholarship which is given annually to an outstanding high school male or female graduate who served as a correspondent to The Providence Journal. The scholarship, named in memory of the late Providence Journal Sports Writer Dick Reynolds, is administered through the bequested estate of Reynolds' late sister Catherine Reynolds.
Also receiving scholarships along with Pearson are this year's Honor Roll boy and girl scholar-athlete recipients, Robert Sewall of Portsmouth High School and Samantha Gawrych of Westerly High School. Both will be awarded a $5,000 Wendy's®/Peter Bennett Scholar-Athlete Scholarship.
This is the second year the $5,000 Wendy's/Peter Bennett Honor Roll Scholar-Athlete Scholarship is given in memory of the late Peter Bennett who died in 1973 at age 11.
The Bennett family, led by Peter's older brother, Harvey Bennett Jr., owner of several Wendy's restaurants in Rhode Island and Vermont, established the scholarship in partnership with the Journal. The Bennett's association with the The Providence Journal Honor Roll goes back to Curt Bennett, who was the Honor Roll recipient in 1966 while at Cranston High School East.
Some 112 Rhode Island High School graduates were nominated for these awards. Wendy's International, Inc., will provide every Providence Journal Honor Roll nominee with a $20 gift certificate. Cardi's Furniture continues its annual community partnership with the Honor Roll program and will award each of the scholarship recipients with $500 gift certificates to Cardi's Furniture Superstores.
Perpetual plaques, recognizing the Honor Roll male student-athletes since 1927, female student-athletes since 1977, and Reynolds correspondents since 1986, are permanently on display at the International Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame, in The Feinstein Building on the Kingston Campus of the University of Rhode Island.
