NewsChannel 8 Reaches Sweeps Milestone
Portland, OR - The May sweeps concluded May 23, and KGW Northwest NewsChannel 8 won the sign-on to sign-off battle for the thirtieth consecutive sweeps. The station's position as the area's news leader continued with an increasing audience in key time periods.
Weekdays, Northwest NewsChannel 8 is the number one local news at noon, 5, 6, 6:30, and 11 PM, with all three evening newscasts showing growth over last May. NewsChannel 8's 5 PM news, the newscast of record, increased 19% over last year, with more than double the audience of its two competitors combined. Northwest NewsChannel 8 was the only station to show growth year to year in the evening news race.
In the late news time period, NewsChannel 8 @ 11 holds a 30% lead over its closest competitor, one of the largest leads of any NBC affiliate in the country.
Northwest NewsChannel 8's strength continued throughout the weekends, winning the mornings, evenings, and the late news time periods.
The station demonstrated its reputation as the area's news leader with an increasing audience for NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams. The national newscast increased it audience 11% over last year at a time when the network news race has become more competitive across the country.
