Belo Dedicates the Howard H "Tim" Hays Media Center to the Former Owner, Editor and Publisher of The Press-Enterprise

Riverside, CA - The Press-Enterprise declared the completion of its new media center in Riverside on September 19, 2007 with a dedication ceremony to its namesake, Howard H "Tim" Hays, former owner, editor and publisher. Hays is honored with a dedication wall in the media center's lobby commemorating his commitment to the community, the newspaper and journalism.

Representatives of Belo Corp., The Press-Enterprise and the Hays family were present for the dedication ceremony.

"Tim Hays is an important figure in the history of print journalism and we are truly pleased to honor his legacy of journalistic excellence and community service for the Inland Southern California region," said Robert W. Decherd, chairman and chief executive officer of Belo Corp., parent company of The Press-Enterprise. "The Howard H "Tim" Hays Media Center honors Tim's life-long goal of shaping The Press-Enterprise into one of the nation's finest newspapers."

Tim Hays, now 90 years old, became assistant editor of The Press-Enterprise in 1946 and advanced to editor in 1949. He led the newspaper to three landmark accomplishments in journalism: the Pulitzer Prize for meritorious public service, when the paper exposed the corrupt way area courts handled property belonging to Indian Tribes in California and two Supreme Court victories in 1984 and 1986. The 1984 case established the public's right to attend jury selection in criminal trials, and the 1986 case asserted the right of the public to attend criminal pre-trial hearings.

During his journalism career, Hays was a driving force behind the establishment of the University of California, Riverside campus, the California Citrus State Historic Park and the preservation of the Mission Inn, a historic landmark in downtown Riverside. Hays was also responsible for the expansion of The Press-Enterprise throughout Riverside and San Bernardino Counties by creating local zoned editions to provide timely and relevant local news to the diverse communities across Inland Southern California.
