Belo Corp. Station Wins Thirty-Third Consecutive Sweeps Sign-On to Sign-Off
PORTLAND, OR -- The February sweeps concluded yesterday, and KGW NewsChannel 8 won the sign-on to sign-off battle for the thirty-third consecutive sweeps. In the news race, NewsChannel 8 demonstrated its leadership as the clear #1 news station. The station built on its long-standing leadership position with its high definition news which premiered on January 21. KGW NewsChannel 8 is the first and only station in the Portland market to broadcast its local news in true high definition.
KGW NewsChannel 8 took a commanding lead in the mornings with NewsChannel 8 @ Sunrise winning the entire 4:30 AM-7:00 AM block by up to a 77% advantage. This fastest-growing newscast, responding to the changing lifestyles of Northwest viewers, earned significant growth at 4:30 AM where viewing now matches or exceeds that of daytime dramas and court programs.
The weekday noon, 5 PM, 6 PM, 6:30 PM, and 11 PM newscasts all won their time periods. The audience for Newschannel 8 @ 5 PM, the newscast of record, grew by 10% over last February. It commanded more than double the combined audience share of the competitors in the time period, and it was the third highest-watched 5 PM news by share among all NBC affiliates in metered markets in the country.
Weekends, KGW NewsChannel 8's journalists earned the largest audience mornings, evenings and at 11 PM.
