KTVK Receives National Award for Exemplary Public Service
PHOENIX -- KTVK-TV (3TV, Arizona's Family), the powerhouse independent television station, has won the 10th annual National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) 2008 Service to America Partnership Award, the only one of its kind given in the broadcast television industry. This prestigious award recognizes outstanding community service by local broadcasters.
3TV, Arizona's Family has won this coveted award for its "Are You My Family?" adoption program, which finds loving homes for some of Arizona's 10,000 foster children. In partnership with two local non-profits Aid to Adoption of Special Kids and Fore Adoption Foundation founded by PGA Golfer Kirk Triplett and his wife Cathi, 64 children have been featured on KTVK's newscasts and on a special website developed for this program. 38 of these children have been placed in homes since its inception in June 2006. This is well over twice the rate at which these children are typically adopted.
Kirk Triplett, President of the Fore Adoption Foundation said, "Our goal is to show that foster care is where these children are, not who they are. One of the reasons for the program's success is television's ability to show the community that these are normal, everyday kids who, through no fault of their own, need a home. Without 3TV's dedication and commitment, many of these children would still be waiting. Now I know why 3TV really is Arizona's Family."
In November 2007, 3TV produced a special primetime program to explain the adoption process and feature some of the many children awaiting adoption. "Are You My Family?" has also helped to increase the number of volunteer tutors and mentors for these children. Hometown weathercaster April Warneke is the program's ambassador for 3TV.
Jack Sander, 3TV interim General Manager said, "3TV has a long history of public service and a deep connection to its community. This program exemplifies the difference a local television station and its partners can make in the lives of the people they serve. 3TV is proud of this program that truly changes children's lives forever and is equally proud of the achievement of our Phoenix staff and community partners."
3TV will be honored at the Celebration of Service to America Awards dinner on Monday, June 9th at The National Building Museum in Washington, D.C.
KTVK (3TV, Arizona's Family) and its Phoenix sister station, KASW (CW6) are part of Belo Corp. 3TV produces 52 hours of local news per week, more local news than most broadcast television stations in the U.S. 3TV's website, azfamily.com is the number one television station website in Arizona. One of the first 40 television stations to convert to high definition, 3TV leads the way in innovation, community involvement and local news and weather coverage delivered by the most popular on-air talent in the market. Its audience credits the station as being the community-minded station that most reflects the spirit of Arizona and its people. 3TV celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2005 and, in keeping with its commitment to public service, helped raise more than 18 million dollars for a much-needed neonatal center at Phoenix Children's Hospital to say "thank you" to their community for 50 years of support. For the past 21 years, 3TV and the Salvation Army have held the largest Christmas Angel toy drive in the country for more than 50,000 disadvantaged children in Arizona every year. 3TV also turns its spotlight on local heroes with its weekly Spirit Award and the station has recognized excellence in teaching for 17 years with its Silver Apple Award.
