Channel 11 Kicks Off the Spirit of Texas Food Drive

21st Annual Food Drive Helps Houston's Hungry During Long Summer Months

HOUSTON -- KHOU-TV/DT Channel 11 continues its longtime commitment to hunger relief in Houston with the 21st Annual Spirit of Texas Food Drive benefiting the Houston Food Bank. Channel 11 and its partners Kroger, Shell and the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center encourage Houstonians to donate to the month-long food drive, which kicked off on Wednesday, June 11th. Summer marks the most crucial time of year for Houston's hungry, as thousands of area school children will be without free meals provided at school, and food pantries often find themselves at their lowest levels.

Non-perishable food donations will be collected at area Kroger locations through July 11th. Kroger will help make donating quick and convenient by offering ready-made bags of food, pre-packaged with items needed most by the Food Bank and available in a variety of prices. A list of participating Kroger locations as well as a list of the Houston Food Bank's most needed items can be found at www.khou.com. Helpful Houstonians can also donate online to the virtual food drive by visiting www.houstonfoodbank.org.

The Spirit of Texas Food Drive will culminate on Friday, July 11th with Channel 11 broadcasting live throughout the day, 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., from the Kroger located at 5150 Buffalo Speedway in Houston. Volunteers will be on hand to accept donations, and a phone bank will be set up for viewers to dial in with monetary contributions as well.

In 2007, the Spirit of Texas Food Drive generated over 302,000 pounds of food and more than $340,000 in cash donations. The Houston Food bank distributes more than 35 million pounds of food and other essentials each year to nearly 400 hunger relief programs in an 18 county service area.
