Medical Editor Kathryn Barrett Retires from WVEC-TV13
Norfolk, VA. -- Medical Editor Kathryn Barrett retires her broadcast post after 25 years of industry excellence. "This was a difficult decision, but in the end, I wanted to spend the remaining time at home as my son enters his senior year in high school," said 13NEWS Medical Editor Kathryn Barrett. "In addition, I will be able to dedicate more time as a long-distance caregiver for an elderly relative with Alzheimer's Disease." Barrett added.
Kathryn joined WVEC-TV13 in 1982 as co-host of "Tidewater Evening". Later, her reporting duties expanded to cover local stories all across the Hampton Roads market. Ultimately, her focus on medical reports began in 1990. Her assignments have taken her to Iraq, Germany, the Southeast, China and Spain. Various stories found her imbedded with the military, starting with her 1995 assignment with the US Navy in Zagreb, Croatia leading her to a 2006 Emmy nominated series with the US Air Force at a combat hospital north of Baghdad, producing 'Healing the Heroes: America's War Wounded' and her Emmy award for Operation Smile 'Helping Honduras'.
"I've been privileged to see first hand, some of the biggest stories to hit Hampton Roads in the past 25 years. As those stories unfolded, it's been a pleasure to be part of the 13NEWS team in covering them." said Barrett. "They've been my second family for many years of my life. I only wish them the best." Barrett added.
"Kathryn's dedication to the station and our viewers has been immeasurable, but we understand her decision and fully respect and support it," said Rich Lebenson, Executive News Director, "I'm sure I speak for the newsroom and say that we will miss her and look forward to the day she returns for occasional breaking medical stories and special reports." Lebenson added.
"If the 13NEWS team needs me in the future, I'll be there" Barrett added. "There are many things on the horizon, I'm planning to emcee 'Physicians for Peace', a 20th anniversary Gala this fall, and continue my association with the Alzheimer's Association."
Barrett's last day will be Wednesday, July 9th.
