KGW NewsChannel 8 Wins National Murrow Award

Belo Station Honored in Prestigious Competition

PORTLAND, OR -- The Radio-Television News Directors Association has announced KGW NewsChannel 8 as the winner in the large television market category for best continuing coverage in its coveted 2008 National Edward R. Murrow Awards. The competition honors excellence in electronic journalism.

While KGW NewsChannel 8 has won several regional Murrow awards, it is the first time the station has captured a national award in the prestigious competition. Only 13 television stations in the nation were selected for recognition in the large market category. In the entire competition, 54 news organizations out of an initial pool of over 3, 459 entries from several hundred news organization are being honored. KGW was the sole Portland television station to be recognized in the awards.

KGW NewsChannel 8's journalism was recognized for its outstanding efforts in its coverage of the December storm.

"The National Edward R. Murrow award is one of the most sought-after, most coveted awards in journalism. Two other stations owned by KGW NewsChannel 8's parent company, Belo Corp., also won national awards, demonstrating the company's consistent commitment to quality journalism. Those stations were WFAA in Dallas, Texas and WCNC in Charlotte, North Carolina. The awards will be presented at the RTNDA Awards Dinner on October 13, 2008, in New York.
