21st Annual KHOU "Spirit of Texas Food Drive" Raises Over 380,000 Pounds of Food and Nearly $224,000
HOUSTON -- Thanks to the support and generosity of the Houston community, KHOU's 21st Annual Spirit of Texas Food Drive collected 387,352 pounds of food and $223,984 for the Houston Food Bank.
Channel 11 and its partners Kroger, Shell and the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center encouraged Houstonians to participate in the month-long endeavor. Food donations were accepted at area Kroger locations and the Houston Food Bank set up a virtual food drive online that allowed visitors to make monetary contributions as well. On the final day of the food drive, July 11th, Channel 11 coordinated a telethon and live broadcast from a Kroger location. Viewers dialed in to the phone bank with pledges and volunteers were on hand throughout the day to accept donations of food.
Channel 11 is proud to continue its longtime commitment to hunger relief, as summer marks the most critical time of year for Houston's hungry. Thousands of area school children are without the free meals provided at school, and food pantries often find themselves at their lowest levels. The Houston Food bank distributes more than 35 million pounds of food and other essentials each year to nearly 400 hunger relief programs in an 18 county service area.
