18th Annual Drive Helps Sustain Blood Supply in Time for Labor Day Weekend

HOUSTON -- KHOU-TV/DT Channel 11 is teaming up with Shell for the 18th Annual Spirit of Texas Blood Drive, benefiting Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. From now through September 1, Houstonians are encouraged to give blood. Each donation will help support Houston's blood supply during the critical summer months and the upcoming Labor Day holiday.

Through the duration of the drive, interested donors have the opportunity to Commit for Life at a variety of locations throughout the Houston area. Each person who donates, or attempts to donate, and credits the "Spirit of Texas Blood Drive" will receive a commemorative T-shirt and a coupon for a free pint of Blue Bell ice cream.

This year, Channel 11 is proud to partner with Shell, a longtime supporter of The Blood Center. Shell invites everyone to donate at One Shell Plaza in Downtown Houston on Thursday, August 28, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Friday, August 29, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other opportunities include donor sites set up at area malls and various Kroger locations. "Because there is no substitute for blood, patients in our region depend on individuals to Commit for Life and donate at least once every quarter," said Brian G. Gannon, president and CEO of Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. "An adequate blood supply must be available at all times, since it's the blood on the shelf that saves lives today."

Commit for Life is a partnership between the community and Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center that is focused on saving lives. To meet the needs of the area community, The Blood Center must collect 308,500 units in 2008, and more than 900 donations every day.

It takes three simple steps: 1) Donate once per quarter; 2) allow The Blood Center to contact you; and 3) spread the word, encouraging others to Commit for Life. Donors must be at least 17 years of age, weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in good general health.
