KHOU Spirit of Texas Blood Drive Collects Over 3,000 Donations
18th Annual Blood Drive Results in over 9,000 lives saved!
HOUSTON -- KHOU-TV/DT Channel 11 wrapped up its 18th Annual Spirit of Texas Blood Drive on Labor Day, September 1, with a total of 3,021 blood donations nearly 400 units more than this year's goal. Each generous donation, which will benefit those served by the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, has the potential to save up to three lives.
Over the course of the three-week campaign, Channel 11 encouraged Houstonians to Commit for Life by donating blood, a vital resource to the health of our community. Donors participated by visiting a variety of locations throughout the Houston area, including The Blood Center's convenient Neighborhood Donor Centers located throughout the city, various Kroger grocery locations and area malls.
This year, Shell joined the Spirit of Texas Blood Drive as the main sponsor and contributed to its success. Shell hosted several employee blood drives at its offices in the Houston area and hosted two public drives on August 28 and 29 at One Shell Plaza in Downtown Houston. The two public drives drew in hundreds of donations from both Channel 11 viewers and the Downtown community.
Commit for Life is a partnership between the community and Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center that is focused on saving lives. To meet the needs of the area community, The Blood Center must collect 308,500 units in 2008.
