Providence Journal News Staff Wins 15 Regional News Awards
CONCORD , N.H. The New England Associated Press News Executives Association (NEAPNEA) recently honored The Providence Journal with 15 awards in its annual writing, photo and design contest.
The award-winning work and contributors are listed here:
First-Place Winners:
- Staff Writer Tom Mooney in the Feature Story category, for "From Tortola to R.I." which described how a lawyer pursued a civil court case against a man in the death of the man's wife
- Staff Writer Karen Lee Ziner in the Beat Reporting category for her reporting on the illegal-immigration debate in Rhode Island
- Staff Writer Lynn Arditi and Staff Photographer John Freidah in the Business/Consumer News category for their work on "Borrowing Trouble," a series of stories on Rhode Island's foreclosure crisis
- A team of Journal reporters in the Continuing Coverage category for their stories on the December 13, 2007 snowstorm
- John Freidah in the Photo Story category for "Foreclosed" photos documenting Rhode Island's foreclosure crisis
Second-Place Winners:
- Staff Photographer John Freidah in the Photo Story category for his "Rough Seas," photos that accompanied a series by Journal writer Paul Davis on Rhode Island's troubled fishing industry
- Photo Editor/Designer Ray Capobianco in the Sports Page Design category for "Dateline Tokyo"
Third-Place Winners:
- Staff Writer Paul Davis in the Enterprise category for "Rough Seas"
- Staff Photographer Gretchen Ertl in the Sports Features category for high school football coverage
- Staff Photographer Frieda Squires in the Photo Story category for "Pushed to the Limit", a series on the Navy's officer candidate school
- Photo Editor/Designer David DelPoio in the Business Page Design category
- Visual Technician Tom Murphy in the Informational Graphics category
Online Public Service Award Winner:
- Staff Writer Mark Arsenault and Photographer John Freidah for the series "Gay Evolution."
Online Special Section Award Winner:
- Staff Writer W. Zachary Malinowski and Staff Photographer Kris Craig for the series "The Gangs of Providence."
