Belo station sets records for on-air, online, and mobile usage
PORTLAND, OR -- KGW NewsChannel 8 demonstrated the power of its award-winning local newsgathering operation and NBC News in the coverage of the historic 2008 presidential election. KGW dominated coverage beginning at 4 PM when the first results from the Eastern Time zone became available. KGW NewsChannel 8 went on to capture the lion's share of the election audience in every time period all the way to midnight and through the early hours of the morning. The station provided continuous coverage through its affiliation with NBC News and MSNBC through the entire night.
At critical points in prime time, KGW NewsChannel 8's audience met or exceeded the combined viewing of all three other Portland stations in election coverage. At its highest point, KGW earned an astonishing 21.1 rating, meaning that more than a fifth of all Portland area households were watching the station's coverage.
KGW NewsChannel 8 provided coverage on multiple platforms, meeting the consumer's need for information on demand. The station pioneered the use of its secondary digital channel by providing continuous coverage of the local races from 8:00-10:00 PM on KGW 8.2, channel 308 on Comcast digital.
The station's website, kgw.com, achieved more than one million page views. More than 100,000 unique visitors accessed the site, which offered continuous network and local streaming video online for eight hours from 3:30-11:30PM. For the first time, the interactive team provided real time election results on kgw.com/mobile, drawing 30,000 visits to the mobile site. In another new media first for the station, the NewsChannel 8 team covered the election with real-time Twitter alerts all night.
