9th Annual Tom's Turkey Drive Was Biggest Ever
More than 9,300 dinners were donated and over $88,000 was raised
Spokane, WA (11/25/2008) The ninth annual Tom's Turkey Drive, headed by KREM 2's Chief Meteorologist Tom Sherry, was the most successful ever, providing over 9,300 turkey dinners for the 2nd Harvest Food Bank to distribute to families in need this Thanksgiving. $88,000 was also raised for 2nd Harvest to help families with food assistance.
This was the ninth year that Tom Sherry headed up the six-week campaign that culminated in a two-day Turkey Drive at all Spokane and Deer Park Rosauers stores on November 21-22.
This year, KREM 2, Rosauers and Numerica Credit Union teamed up with the Salvation Army and 2nd Harvest Food Bank for what has become the largest food drive in the Inland Northwest.
As in past years, Rosauers Supermarkets put together the complete turkey dinners for a family of four for a $15 donation, despite the fact that food prices are up again. Downtown Toyota, Honda and Lexus joined the effort this year to help subsidize the cost of the meals, so the donation price remained the same as last year.
In addition, Numerica Credit Union, a longtime sponsor, gave a generous cash donation, provided a way to donate online, paid for volunteers' t-shirts and organized an impressive volunteer force at Rosauers.
Many area churches gave donations and provided volunteers for the event. Life Center Foursquare Church in Spokane donated more than $25,000 to Tom's Turkey Drive.
KREM 2 is grateful to the thousands of Spokanites who purchased Thanksgiving dinners so that thousands of families in need will enjoy a great Thanksgiving dinner.
Tom's Turkey Drive recipients started lining up at the Salvation Army at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, November 25 to receive their turkey diners. The distribution process took 12 hours, and in nine years, no one in need has left without a delicious meal to enjoy at home.
