KHOU Spirit of Texas Toy Drive Kicks Off Thanksgiving Day
Annual Toy Drive Helps Spread Holiday Cheer to Gulf Coast Residents in Need
HOUSTON KHOU-TV/DT Channel 11 rings in the holidays with the Spirit of Texas Toy Drive benefiting The Salvation Army. The annual toy drive kicks off on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, and continues through December 22. Donations of new, unwrapped toys will be accepted at area partner locations Randalls Food Markets, Casa Ol Restaurants, Keller Williams Realty offices and the Channel 11 studio at 1945 Allen Parkway.
Since it began in 2001, The Spirit of Texas Toy Drive has grown to become Houston's largest toy drive, generating more than 46,000 gifts for area families in 2007. This year, the need for holiday assistance is widespread.
"Our community is dealing with an economic downturn and many of our neighbors are still recovering from Hurricane Ike. This holiday season, we are counting on the generosity of Houstonians more than ever," says Susan McEldoon, President & General Manager, KHOU-TV.
Donations collected at Channel 11 and its partner locations will be distributed through the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program. For over 115 years, The Salvation Army has provided Christmas assistance for disadvantaged children and seniors in our community.
"Many families do not have the resources to celebrate this Christmas the way they normally would. They are asking us for assistance, and our goal is to make sure that no family spends this holiday season without experiencing the true joy of the Christmas season. The Salvation Army is very grateful to KHOU and the rest of our partners in this year's Spirit of Texas Toy Drive and we are confident that our community will continue supporting us as they have in years past," says Major Marshall Gesner, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of Greater Houston.
