WHAS11 Will Conduct 2nd DTV Transition Readiness Test December 17, 2008
Louisville, KY, WHAS11 will conduct its second DTV transition test of this year on Wednesday, December 17th at 7:29 PM. This test is designed to prepare viewers for the end of analog television on February 17, 2009. On that date, all full-power television stations in the country are required to terminate their analog broadcast signals and deliver only digital signals (an event referred to as the "digital transition"). WHAS11's test will be broadcast for approximately five-minutes and will simulate the termination of analog broadcasting by removing the video signal that feeds the station's analog transmitter causing the screen to go dark. On the station's digital channel 11.1, and on cable and satellite systems that receive direct feeds from the station, WHAS11 will notify viewers that they have successfully passed the test. At the conclusion of the test, the station will notify viewers that if their screen test failed they need to take corrective action. WHAS11 will provide information to help viewers get the answers and resources for additional DTV transition assistance. Immediately following the test, WHAS11 will broadcast a special DTV program "Countdown to DTV" that should provide viewers with information and answers to most of their DTV questions. Then on Thursday, December 18th, WHAS11 staff will be at Bonnycastle Appliance located in the Louisville Home and Style area of Mall St. Matthews to answer viewer questions about DTV.
An on-going issue with the digital transition is confusion over what viewers need to do to ensure they will continue to receive television service after the transition. An additional issue facing small multichannel TV service providers (such as community antenna systems, apartment complexes, retirement homes, and hotels) is that some have not yet made necessary equipment changes to continue to deliver programming after February 17, 2009. These concerns led broadcasters to develop local test programs to help viewers determine if their television sets require converter boxes or other adjustments in advance of the digital transition. The test program will also help small multichannel TV service providers determine whether additional equipment is necessary in order to provide a station's digital signal to their customers.
Digital broadcasting provides a clearer picture and more programming options. The digital transition will also free up airwaves for use by emergency responders and other wireless services.
