KGW NewsChannel 8's Studio on the Square Nearing Completion
Portland, OR - Construction on the new high definition KGW Studio on the Square will enter an exciting new phase this week.
On Wednesday, January 14, painters will complete the custom studio floor with the final coats of high-gloss paint. The high gloss urethane paint is the same paint used by the aircraft industry. The specialized paint is required for the extra durability needed for a television studio.
The final coat will be a deep blue color selected to compliment the color scheme of the KGW Studio on the Square set and KGW NewsChannel 8's news graphics.
Preparation of the floor requires a five layer process that began with the grinding of the floor and ends with the final high-gloss blue paint. The floor demands a perfectly level surface so the high definition robotic cameras can smoothly glide across it. The cameras will be controlled remotely from the KGW NewsChannel 8 main HD studios several blocks away on southwest Jefferson Street.
The floor will need several days to cure before the next exciting stage of the project, which is the arrival of the set. It was designed by the same company that created the set for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
The Studio is under construction in the space previously occupied by Powell's Books in Pioneer Courthouse Square.
"We're thrilled to be one step closer to completion." said DJ Wilson, KGW NewsChannel 8 president and general manager. "When we're finished, the KGW Studio on the Square will be one of only a handful of downtown studios in the country modeled after the Today Show concept of directly connecting with the community through a publicly viewable location."
KGW NewsChannel 8 will feature stories on the completion of this portion of the studio construction in its 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM newscasts Wednesday, January 14, and also at the KGW Studio on the Square page at kgw.com at www.kgw.com/thesquare
The KGW Studio on the Square is scheduled for completion in first quarter of 2009.
