WHAS11 Launches Mobile Traffic Camera Service
WHAS11 Mobile Traffic Tracker Helps Louisville Area Commuters to Plan Best Route for their Daily Commute
LOUISVILLE, Ky., February 17, 2009 A free mobile traffic video service is now available to the Louisville-area commuters, helping them plan the most efficient route to their office, home or leisure destinations.
The 11 Mobile Traffic Tracker, provided by WHAS11 in partnership with 3rd Dimension, Inc., New York City, provides drivers with access to live video streams from 62 strategically located TRIMARC traffic cameras on the region's three main highway corridors I-71, I-64 and I-65 as well as the Watterson Expressway. The service will assist the more than 1.2 million residents of Jefferson County (including Metro Louisville) and the surrounding eight counties.
The live traffic video feeds are provided by cameras operated by TRIMARC, a project of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in the Louisville region.
"Traffic information today helps motorists to make intelligent decisions and keeps our expressway system running at peak efficiency," said Tim Emington, TRIMARC operations manager. "TRIMARC welcomes the opportunity to cooperate with companies such as 3rd Dimension. This service will be an excellent addition to the ways we share traffic information with the motoring public."
The advertising-supported service is compatible with Java and data enabled phones on the Sprint, Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile networks (and others); users can access the service on popular smart phones including the iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm and Motorola Q.
Louisville Area commuters wishing to try the service can download it from the WHAS11 website (www.whas11.com), by calling (877) WHAS460 / (877) 942-7460, by visiting the iTunes App Store or from 3rd Dimension's Web site (www.3dmobileyes.com). Once installed, selecting cameras along the route from the program's menu is simple; favorite routes can be saved and accessed quickly with a push of a single button. Drivers are advised to use the WHAS11 Mobile Traffic Tracker prior to getting behind the wheel to help them plot the quickest, most fuel-efficient, least polluting, safest route.
WHAS11 is known throughout the region as the number one source for local news, weather and sports coverage," said Mark Pimentel, general manager and president of WHAS11. "Now, we're proud to be the number one source of local traffic information for people on the go."
In addition to the Louisville market, the Mobileyes service is available in San Francisco; Hartford, Conn.; New York; Los Angeles; Kansas City; Houston; Knoxville; Indianapolis; Detroit; and Washington, D.C.
WHAS11 is part of Belo Corp. (BLC), one of the nation's largest pure-play, publicly-traded television companies, with 2008 annual revenue of $733 million. TRIMARC, a project of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, is an ITS Traffic Management System for the interstate highways in the Louisville Metro area. TRIMARC includes an integrated system of sensors, cameras, dynamic message signs, highway advisory radio and computers monitoring more than 60 miles of interstate traffic in the greater Louisville area. The TRIMARC Control Center collects information on traffic flow, construction areas and accidents. Once collected, the information then is disseminated to motorists via dynamic message signs and highway advisory radio. Along with providing real-time traffic information to motorists, TRIMARC operators notify the appropriate public safety agencies for response to freeway incidents. Additionally, the TRIMARC Freeway Service Patrol provides roadway assistance for vehicles stranded on the interstate. Northrop Grumman is the system integrator and operator for TRIMARC.
