KGW NewsChannel 8 and Oregon Food Bank Launch Sixth Annual "KGW NewsChannel 8 Great Food Drive"

Belo Station Joins with Tillamook Cheese and U.S. Bank

PORTLAND, Ore. For the sixth year, KGW NewsChannel 8 is launching its major public service campaign to address the hunger problem in the Northwest, it was announced jointly today by KGW President and General Manager DJ Wilson and Oregon Food Bank Executive Director and CEO Rachel Bristol.

Throughout the month of March, KGW NewsChannel 8 and Oregon Food Bank will strive to raise one-million pounds of food to help supply 20 regional food banks and 915 hunger-relief agencies across Oregon and Clark County, Wash.

For the third year, Tillamook Cheese is participating as the presenting sponsor. As part of the sponsorship, Tillamook will donate to the Oregon Food Bank Network, one cent of every purchase of Tillamook® cheese in Oregon and Clark County, Wash., during March. For the sixth year, U.S. Bank will continue to support the food drive as a major sponsor.

"As unemployment and foreclosures climb, so does the number of people who seek emergency food through the Oregon Food Bank Network," Bristol says. "Thousands of new faces are walking in the doors of local food pantries ... people who have never asked for help before ... people who just a few months ago had family-wage jobs and have been laid off. At the same time, the struggle just gets worse for senior citizens living on declining incomes, the disabled, and the working poor."

To donate food, drop off nonperishable food at any U.S. Bank branch or at KGW's studio at 1501 SW Jefferson in downtown Portland. To donate funds, visit www.oregonfoodbank.org or www.kgw.com.

"The cry for help has never been more overwhelming," said DJ Wilson, KGW NewsChannel 8 president and general manager. "We ask that everyone who is fortunate enough to have food security themselves to open their hearts and give what they can to help others during these critical times."

"Every day one-in-five people in Oregon are facing the challenge of providing food for their family," says Malia Wasson, President of U.S. Bank. "There has never been a more important time to support the work of the Oregon Food Bank. The situation is urgent but we can make a difference. I encourage everyone to participate in the Great Food Drive by donating cash and/or food at any U.S. Bank branch."

"As a food producer we recognize the ever-increasing importance of food security for those greatly impacted by the economic setback", says Jay Allison, Tillamook Cheese vice president of sales and marketing. "We are proud to partner with KGW to drive this effort to great results and help those affected most. Our goal is to raise 1 million pounds of food this year and throughout the month of March, in honor of our 100th Anniversary, we will be donating a penny per pound of cheese sold in Oregon and SW Washington to the Oregon Food Bank."

"I invite everyone to join the KGW NewsChannel 8 Great Food Drive and to do what you can to make a difference in the lives of people in your community who are hungry in these difficult times," Bristol says. "Your food and fund donations will help people in need in your local community. By working together, we can eliminate hunger and its root causes because no one should be hungry."
