Belo station #1 sign-on to sign-off in March 2009 Nielsen sweeps period

PORTLAND, OR - KGW NewsChannel 8 earned its 37th consecutive win sign-on to sign-off in the March 2009 Nielsen ratings period which ended April 1. The traditional sweeps period of February was moved to March by the A.C Nielsen Company to avoid coinciding with the DTV transition which was scheduled to occur on February 17, 2009.

KGW NewsChannel 8 continued its position as the leading news station in the weekday 5:00-7:00 PM hours, with its 5:00 PM newscast of record earning almost double the share of the closest competitor.

KGW NewsChannel 8's hybrid news and infotainment local program, Live @ 7, captured an audience just one share less than the veteran syndicated program, Entertainment Tonight. Live @ 7 began broadcasting from the KGW Studio on the Square broadcast facility on Tuesday, March 17. The new location from the studio at Pioneer Courthouse Square showcases the show's interaction with the community. NewsChannel 8's Stephanie Stricklen hosts the show.

NewsChannel 8's 11 PM news was the only newscast in the time period to grow share over the most recent sweep period of November, 2008. NewsChannel 8 @ 11 also showed the greatest growth from its lead-in program, increasing 2 shares from NBC's prime time. The station's 10:00 PM newscast on Portland's CW also grew one share over November 2008.

Weekends, NewsChannel 8 is the station Portlanders turn to for news and information. The station's morning, evening, and Saturday 11 PM newscasts were all #1 in their time periods. The station's Sunday 11 PM news tied for #1, even with a 9 share lead-in disadvantage from NBC's 10 PM programming.

Weekends saw the success of another locally produced program from KGW. The weekly program, Straight Talk, premiered in January 2009. The issues program provides in-depth discussion with local newsmakers. Straight Talk was the most-watched program in the time period, demonstrating the level of citizen interest in community issues. Straight Talk is hosted by anchor Laural Porter and is presented with limited interruptions.

"In these challenging times, our role as journalists is even more vital in our community," said DJ Wilson, KGW president and general manager. "We take that very seriously. We're also pleased that our significant investment in the new KGW Studio on the Square has brought added vitality to our downtown core, furthering the optimism and growth in Portland."
