KGW NewsChannel 8 Claims 38th Straight Ratings Win
Belo station #1 sign-on to sign-off in May 2009 Nielsen sweeps period
KGW NewsChannel 8 earned its 38th consecutive win sign-on to sign-off in the May 2009 Nielsen ratings period which ended May 20.
KGW NewsChannel 8 continued its position as the leading local news station in the weekday 5:00-7:00 PM hours, with its 5:00 PM newscast of record capturing a greater share of viewers than the other two closest competitors combined.
NewsChannel 8's 11 PM news was the only newscast in the time period to grow share from its lead-in program, increasing audience share by 25% from the last quarter-hour of NBC's prime time programming. KGW NewsChannel 8 was also the only late newscast at 10 PM or 11 PM to increase share year to year, and only NewsChannel 8 @ 11 maintained its share through both quarter-hours.
The success of broadcasting from the new KGW Studio on the Square, located in Pioneer Courthouse Square, was demonstrated in the audience growth in NewsChannel 8 @ Sunrise. The morning newscast tied for #1 in share in the 6 AM hour, and increased viewership over the two most recent books of March 2009 and November 2008.
The enthusiastic response from Portlanders for the KGW Studio on the Square was seen in the station's hybrid news and infotainment local program, Live @ 7. Live @ 7 broadcasts from the KGW Studio on the Square broadcast facility, where the show actively interacts with the community. NewsChannel 8's Stephanie Stricklen hosts the show.
Weekends, NewsChannel 8 continued to be the leading choice for news and information. The station's morning, evening, and Saturday 11 PM newscasts were all #1 in their time periods. The station's Sunday 11 PM news tied for #1 in share, despite the weaker lead-in from NBC's 10 PM programming.
On Saturdays, KGW NewsChannel 8 continued its commitment to weekly in-depth discussion of local issues with the program Straight Talk. Straight Talk is hosted by anchor Laural Porter and is presented with limited interruptions.
