KGW NewsChannel 8 Claims 39th Straight Ratings Win
Belo station #1 sign-on to sign-off in July 2009 Nielsen sweeps period
PORTLAND, OR - KGW NewsChannel 8 earned its 39th consecutive win sign-on to sign-off in the July 2009 Nielsen ratings period which ended July 29. It was the first month that audience viewing was captured with Nielsen's Local People Meter technology, a new measuring method that tabulates both household and demographic viewing daily.
KGW NewsChannel 8 continued its position as the leading local news station in the weekday noon and 5:00-7:00 PM hours, with its 5:00 PM newscast of record capturing a 33% greater share of household viewing than the next closest competitor. The station was #1 in the key adult 25-54 demographic.
NewsChannel 8's 11 PM news demonstrated its strength in this first sweep using the LPM methodology. The newscast was the viewer's choice during the record-breaking heat wave with the area's leading meteorologist, Matt Zaffino. NewsChannel 8 @ 11 increased share over the lead-in NBC programming by 83%. In the key adults 25-54 demographic the newscast captured a 38% advantage over the closest competitor.
Portlanders' excitement for the KGW Studio on the Square, located in Pioneer Courthouse Square, was shown in the popularity of the station's morning and noon news, both of which originate from the studio. NewsChannel 8 @ Sunrise claimed the #1 position in household share in the 6 AM hour. NewsChannel 8 @ noon captured a household audience share 62% greater than the other sole competitor.

The station's hybrid news and infotainment local program, Live @ 7, also broadcasts from the KGW Studio on the Square broadcast facility, where the show actively interacts with individuals and groups on the Square.
