3TV and Bashas' Back-to-School Food Drive Raises $25K in August

Donations come at vital time as one in five Arizona children struggle with hunger

PHOENIX During the month of August, 3TV Arizona's Family teamed up with another well-known Arizona family for the 3TV and Bashas' Back-to-School Food and Supply Drive. Through the generous contributions of Arizonans, Kraft Foods, Nabisco and Coca-Cola, $25,278 was raised in one month for the Association of Arizona Food Banks and hundreds of school supplies were given to Communities in Schools of Arizona.

During the drive, people were encouraged to give by purchasing a $1 paper school bus icon to benefit local food banks, purchasing a $10 food bank bag or donating school supplies to help Arizona kids returning to the classroom.

The donations come at vital time. In a report recently released by Feeding America, the nation's largest domestic hunger relief charity, Arizona food banks distributed 42.4% more food in the first two quarters of 2009 versus 2008. The demand for emergency food boxes, which includes a 3-5 day supply of food for a family of four, increased by 23%. Even more startling, the report pointed out that in Arizona one in five children are struggling with hunger. That is the sixth highest rate in the country.

"With a recent Census report revealing 16.1% of Arizonans are living in poverty, now is the time for the community to come together to support those struggling with hunger," said Ginny Hildebrand, Executive Director of the Association of Arizona Food Banks. "We appreciate Bashas' and 3TV's commitment to helping hungry Arizona households get the food they need."

As the holidays approach people are encouraged to continue to support their local food banks. For more information on how to help please visit:
