KTVK Veteran Reporter Mike Watkiss Recognized by FBI

First Arizona Journalist to Receive Director's Community Leadership Award

Phoenix, AZ KTVK 3TV's award-winning veteran reporter, Mike Watkiss, was recently honored by receiving the Director's Community Leadership award from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Watkiss, who was nominated by the FBI Phoenix Division, is the first and only Arizona journalist to receive the award. He was nominated for his professionalism, objectivity and leadership in the Arizona media community. FBI Director Robert Mueller III presented Watkiss with the award late last week in a ceremony at FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C.

The Director's Community Leadership Award was formally created in 1990 as a way to honor individuals and organizations for their efforts in combating crime, terrorism, drugs and violence in America. Each year the FBI's 56 field offices nominate an individual for the award. This is the first year journalists have been eligible to receive the award. Past recipients from the FBI's Phoenix Division include Johnny Basha and M. Zuhdi Jasser.

"Mike's utmost professionalism, passion and dedication to his craft motivated us to nominate him for this award," said Special Agent in Charge Nathan T. Gray. "His ability to objectively and accurately report how the FBI works on a daily basis makes him a true leader in the media community."

Watkiss, who joined KTVK in 1996, has covered some of the FBI's most wanted including FLDS Polygamist leader Warren Jeffs, murderer and armed robber Jason Derek Brown and Robert William Fisher who is wanted for allegedly killing his wife and two young children then blowing up their family home in April of 2001. Watkiss learned first hand how the FBI works in 2006 when he attended and graduated from the FBI's Citizens' Academy.

"Mike is truly a special reporter," said Brad Remington, Executive News Director of KTVK 3TV. "There is nothing cookie cutter about this guy. He's tough and he's driven, but he also has a heart of gold. He manages to be both passionate and compassionate in his reporting, and it comes across in every story he does."
