KHOU Wins Investigative Journalism's "Triple Crown" With Peabody Award

Houston, TX -- KHOU-TV has won a 2009 George Foster Peabody Award for its investigative one-hour special "Under Fire: Discrimination and Corruption in the Texas National Guard." This latest national award gives Channel 11's investigative team, the 11 News Defenders, what is widely-regarded to be a "clean-sweep" for any broadcast investigative unit.

In the past six months, "Under Fire" has won the prestigious duPont-Columbia Award, the Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) Medal and now the Peabody - three top contests for television journalism.

In addition, the program has been honored with a National Headliner Award for Investigative Reporting and was a finalist for the 2010 Goldsmith Prize for investigative reporting from the Shorenstein Center at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

"Under Fire" was the culmination of a two-year investigation that exposed widespread discrimination and fraud in the Texas National Guard. KHOU recipients of the Peabody Award are investigative reporter Mark Greenblatt, executive producer David Raziq and photojournalist Keith Tomshe. This is the Defenders third Peabody award since the unit was created 12 years ago. In that time the team has also won four duPont-Columbia Awards, four IRE Awards, three National Edward R. Murrow Awards and many other esteemed honors.

The Peabody Awards, established in 1940, are administered by the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. The Peabody recognizes distinguished achievement and meritorious public service by stations, networks, producing organizations and individuals. The awards will be presented on May 17 at a ceremony in New York.
