KING 5 & KREM 2 Spokane Combine To Win Nearly Half of Award Winners in Big Market TV Category

Seattle, WA - KING 5's won six awards from the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) of the Pacific Northwest this past weekend. The majority of the wins went to the KING 5 Investigators, with the unit capturing first and second place in the investigative reporting category. Of the 17 award winners in the category of large market television stations, KING's five awards and KREM's three awards resulted in Belo stations securing 47% of the winners.

In the first place investigative story, reporter Linda Byron examined the death of a patient at a cosmetic clinic doing business in Western Washington. The Washington State Medical Quality Assurance Commission is now investigating the issues raised in her first reports. The woman's death was ruled an overdose. And last week, Byron reported that the dosage of pain medication given to the patient could be categorized as stratospherically high by the President of the NorthWest Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The second place winner in the investigative category was for Susannah Frame's report on a foster child's case that exposed how state workers made mistakes, stonewalled the court system, and broke laws.

"It's an honor to receive professional recognition for our coverage, but when a report changes a dangerous practice, stops wasteful spending or provides a voice to the voiceless, the KING 5 Investigators have done their work." said Mark Ginther, executive News Director of KING 5 News.

KING 5 was also recognized for general news, feature and sports reporting as well as for website design for
