KING 5's School's Out Summer Food Drive Returns Nutritious Meals Needed for Thousands of School Kids on Summer Break
Call to Action Runs June 14th 18th
Seattle, WA Summer is a fun time for children to take a long break from school. It's also a time when many Western Washington school children who depend on free or reduced priced school meals go hungry.
KING 5's School's Out Summer Food Drive is back for a second year to bridge the gap when classrooms are empty and families turn to food banks for help in feeding their children. The demand is high. In the fall of 2008, 42% of all Washington school children signed up for free or reduced price school meals.
This KING 5 call to action, in partnership with sponsor Northwest Carpenters, is asking people to bring healthy kid food items or cash/checks to five Western Washington shopping malls beginning Monday, June 14th between 6AM and 3PM to boost the supplies at Northwest Harvest food banks. The School's Out collection sites include Northgate, Everett, Tacoma, Redmond and Tukwila.
"It's gratifying to see what happens when our community comes together for a great cause," said Pat Costello, Vice President / Station Manager of KING 5, KONG 6/16, Northwest Cable News, KING5.com and NWCN.com. "We sincerely hope that our summer food drive will make it possible so that no child in Western Washington goes hungry."
