KGW NewsChannel 8 Kicks Off KGW School Supply Drive

Belo station's third annual campaign targets need for school success

PORTLAND, OR - KGW NewsChannel 8 in partnership with OnPoint Community Credit Union, University of Phoenix, and the local Toyota dealers today kicked off the 3rd annual KGW School Supply Drive with the purpose of sending 5,000 local area children back to school with the basic school supplies that they couldn't otherwise afford. In Oregon, almost half of all children live in low-income families and cannot afford even the most basic school supplies.

"More than ever, a good education is the stepping stone to success. Yet for many children, a lack of basic school supplies stands between them and success. It takes so little to make a meaningful difference in these children's lives," said DJ Wilson, President and General Manager of KGW NewsChannel 8. "We appreciate the participation of our business partners who recognize the importance of this issue."

Through Labor Day, the drive encourages viewers to make cash and loose supply donations of any amount or to simply purchase a $25 Virtual Pack, which will supply one student with the basic supplies needed for an entire year. All donations will benefit local area schools and will be distributed with the help of Schoolhouse Supplies, the non-profit Free Store for Teachers.

"We are excited to support the KGW School Supply Drive again this year. As a credit union founded by schoolteachers, we know how important it is to ensure that our local kids have the tools they need to thrive in the classroom," said Rob Stuart, President/CEO of OnPoint Community Credit Union.

"The University of Phoenix Oregon Campus is excited to partner with KGW once again for the annual KGW School Supply Drive. In challenging economic times this effort is more important than ever, and we are committed to helping provide children in our community with the tools and resources needed to succeed in the classroom." - Flint Holland, Campus Director.

"The local Toyota dealers are excited to be partnering with KGW and the School Supply Drive. Education is extremely important and we want local students feel confident in the classroom by helping to provide the school supplies necessary for them to succeed. All 11 participating local Toyota dealerships will serve as collection sites for loose school supplies now through Labor Day. Knowing the economic challenges being faced and the increased need for classroom supplies, we encourage those members of the community who can contribute to do so."

"Schoolhouse Supplies is delighted to participate in this year's KGW School Supply Drive, designed to raise awareness of the need for more school supplies and offer the community an easy way to make a tangible difference in the lives of thousands of local children," said Gayle Kellman, Executive Director of the award-winning non-profit which supports public education by giving students and teachers free classroom supplies.
