KGW NewsChannel 8 Breaks New Ground In Election Coverage
Belo station's website and mobile usage smashes prior records
PORTLAND, OR - In this week's historic mid-term election, KGW NewsChannel 8 broke new ground in multi-media journalism with live coverage on four different platforms. On its primary channel, it was the only station to provide continuous election coverage for all of prime time, and the only station to provide a full hour of local coverage at 8 PM with the first returns. Coverage began at 5 PM with national results and continued until 12:30 AM with both national and local coverage. The station deployed 14 crews across Oregon and Washington and eight analysts to provide insight into the tight gubernatorial, U.S. Senate, and U.S. Congressional races.
For the first time, the station provided distinct and simultaneous coverage on two television channels. Its primary channel, KGW 8.1, offered both national returns from NBC and local coverage. The station broadcast all local coverage on its new digital subchannel, KGW 24/7, on KGW 8.2 Comcast 308.
KGW NewsChannel 8 utilized its website and mobile applications to a new level to meet the consumer desire for information on the go. KGW.com tallied 2.5 million page views in 24 hours. It represented a new one-day record for election coverage. The website had 123,000 unique visitors on election day alone, with high usage continuing as the ballot counting extended into a second day. KGW NewsChannel 8's live broadcast on the KGW.com live stream was watched by 7,000 people.
Election night was also a watershed moment for use of KGW.com mobile, setting a 24-hour record with an astonishing 400,000 mobile page views. For the first time ever, fully 20% of "dot-com" traffic came via the mobile phone.
"We take the commitment to expansive election coverage very seriously, and this year we were able to maximize all our assets to extend unique coverage," said DJ Wilson, president and general manager of the KGW Media Group. "Our customers want instant information wherever they are, on whatever screen is with them. We're delighted at how viewers turned to us on every device for up to the minute returns and analysis."
