KING 5's Home Team Harvest Reaches Goal

Ten Million Meals in Ten Years!

Mobile Texting Crucial to Northwest Food Drive Success

Seattle, WA - Home Team Harvest, KING 5's charitable campaign of ending hunger in Western Washington, now in its tenth year, achieved and surpassed an ambitious goal food and cash donations equal to ten million meals in ten years.

In partnership with U.S. Bank, the 2010 Home Team Harvest collected the equivalent of 2.7 million meals from last Saturday's food drive to benefit Northwest Harvest Washington's own statewide hunger relief agency. This year's collection pushed the ten year total to 10,060,000 meals for the years 2001 to 2010 and the drive continues through December 30th at local U.S. Bank locations.

A significant factor to this year's food drive success is KING 5's Home Team Harvest text option enabling people to text the word "Hometeam" to 85944 through the end of the year for an automatic $10 donation. As of today's date, nearly 52,000 meals from 2010's record setting food drive came from text donations.

"For our tenth Home Team Harvest campaign we envisioned a big goal of ten million meals in ten years", said Pat Costello, Vice President and KING 5 Station Manager. "Because our community is so responsive to fighting hunger, we not only reached our goal, we exceeded it! We're very grateful to everyone who heard our call to take action and responded with the best and most needed gifts of the holiday season."

Despite a struggling economic climate, this year's Home Team Harvest doubled the amount collected in 2009 of 1.06 million meals the high water mark at that time.

"We are thrilled with this monumental achievement made possible by KING 5, U.S. Bank, and the Washington community," said Northwest Harvest's Executive Director Shelley Rotondo. "This is a time of tremendous need across our state. To have raised well over 2.5 million meals this month and more than ten million meals in ten years is remarkable."

A record eight locations scattered all around Western Washington became the collection hubs for KING 5's tenth Home Team Harvest on a chilly Saturday morning on December 4th. The food drive collection centers consisted of seven major retail shopping malls as well as the U.S. Bank site in Auburn.
