Belo Corp. (BLC) Television Station, KING-TV, Honored With Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award
DALLAS - Belo Corp. (NYSE: BLC), one of the nation's largest pure-play, publicly-traded television companies, announced today that KING-TV, its NBC affiliate in Seattle/Tacoma, has been selected to receive an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton Award.
The Silver Baton will be awarded to KING for its investigative series, Waste on the Water, which uncovered millions of wasted and misused tax dollars in the Washington state ferry system. The reports were the product of a four-month investigation by the KING investigative team, including reporter Susannah Frame, producer Kellie Cheadle, photographers Steve Douglas and Doug Burgess and news director Mark Ginther.
"I'm extremely proud of the entire KING news team that works tirelessly to serve the viewers in Seattle/Tacoma every day. The series of reports engaged the community and brought about positive change which is television news working at its best," said Peter L. Diaz, Belo's president/Media Operation.
This marks the fifth time KING has been honored with an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Silver Baton. Since 2000, Belo television stations have received 13 duPont Awards, which is more than any other commercial station group.
The Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Awards honor overall excellence in broadcast journalism and have been administered by the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University since 1968. Established by Jessie Ball duPont in 1942 in memory of her late husband, Alfred I. duPont, the awards are the broadcast equivalent of the Pulitzer Prizes, which are also administered by the Graduate School of Journalism. KING will receive its Silver Baton at a ceremony hosted by Columbia School of Journalism in New York on January 20, 2011.
