KGW NewsChannel 8 Honored for Overall Excellence and Best Newscast by Oregon AP Awards

Belo station is the most-honored Portland broadcast outlet

PORTLAND, OR - KGW NewsChannel 8's outstanding journalism was again recognized Saturday when it earned the honors for overall excellence and best newscast in the 2010 Oregon AP Broadcast Awards in Division 1. The awards were announced Saturday, April 16 at the OAPBA annual banquet at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

The station received the best newscast award for its 5 PM newscast of November 27, 2010 which covered the holiday bomb plot at Pioneer Courthouse Square. The overall excellence award acknowledged KGW NewsChannel 8's coverage of the biggest breaking news stories of the year, its expansive election year coverage with exclusive debates and weekly public affairs programming, coverage of the Olympic Games, and its major public service campaigns.

These top awards are in addition to the eight first-place awards for broadcast and online journalism previously announced in March. KGW NewsChannel 8 earned more first-place awards than any television station in the division. With the awards given on April 16, the station has won 10 of 18 categories in the Oregon AP competition.

"Belo is a journalism company with a capital "J" and we are truly honored at the significant acknowledgement of the work we do as evidenced by the number of awards KGW NewsChannel 8 received from the 2010 Oregon AP Broadcast awards," said DJ Wilson, president and general manager of the KGW Media Group. "We are intensely focused on inviting conversation about the news and current events on all platforms and we are very pleased to have the quality and the depth of our reporting recognized in this prestigious competition."
