KING 5 Wins Back to Back Murrow Awards for Overall Excellence, Website and Sports Reporting
Five Murrow Awards include News Writing and Photography
Seattle, WA - KING 5 News is honored to win five regional Edward R. Murrow Awards and receive back to back 2010-2011 victories in three categories: Overall Excellence, Web Site (KING5.com), and Video Sports Reporting. KING 5 reporter Chris Daniels also won for writing and photojournalist Doug Burgess won for video.
As announced today by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), Murrow Award winners must exhibit the pursuit of excellence that Edward R. Murrow set as the standard for radio and television broadcast news. KING 5's region includes all large market television stations in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska.
"Edward R. Murrow's broadcast legacy of fairness, integrity and perseverance is as important today as it was seventy years ago," said Mark Ginther, executive news director of KING 5 News. "In Western Washington we uphold these same principles that embody journalism at its best and we're honored to receive these five RTDNA Awards that bear the Murrow name".
Combined with KGW-8's five Murrow Awards, the two Belo stations won ten of the region's 13 RTDNA journalism awards. KING 5 is the only Seattle TV station to win more than two Murrow Awards this year.
Doug Burgess is part of the KING 5 photojournalist team that won the National Press Photographers Association's station of the year. Burgess and KING 5 sports reporter/anchor Chris Egan have also received 2011 regional Emmy nominations. Chris Daniels' writing award is for a three story compilation: a swarm of bees at a Beacon Hill apartment complex, Auburn's civic pride for their little league baseball team, and a story of grieving friends and family for five young lives lost in a Fremont apartment fire.
Since 1971, the RTDNA has been honoring outstanding achievement in electronic journalism with Edward R. Murrow Awards. Entries are evaluated by a diverse panel of judges from around the nation. KING 5 is automatically entered into the national RTDNA Murrow Award competition in June.
